It was a transformative moment for many of us to see that first photo transmitted from the moon showing our green-blue planet floating in a sea of darkness. As astronaut, Russell Schweikart said: “When you go around the earth in an hour and a half, you begin to realize that your identity is with that whole thing. From where you see it, the earth is a whole … no borders and boundaries … and it is beautiful.” It was a simple vision that helped us understand our shared humanity as earthlings and that we inhabit the same home.
The Story of the CEN Tagline
This shift in perspective, from allegiance to a specific country to citizen of the Earth, has been intensified by a growing understanding of our planet as a living breathing organism. This expanded consciousness is the foundational thinking of CEN members and it profoundly affects how each of us participates in our communities and with the Earth herself. This ecological sensibility inspires and requires us as elders to reweave humanity into the fabric of nature. Like tribal elders of the past, today’s conscious elders are called to bear witness to the long- term perspective, transmitting wisdom from the ancestors to secure our future generations. Thus our CEN tagline: One Earth One Humanity One Future.
The Story of the CEN Logo: Indra's Net Story
Indra’s Net provides an allegory of our Conscious Elders Network, weaving together a Hindu myth and modern physics. Indra’s net is a cosmic network of interdependent interpenetrating things, much like a spider’s web in intricacy. It stretches out indefinitely in all directions. At each node, or crossing point, of the net hangs a single glittering jewel. Since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number and each gem reflects all the other gems in the net. Each of us is a sparkling jewel in Indra’s Net. And every jewel is connected with all the other jewels in the net; thereby every person is intimately connected with all other persons in the universe.
From The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra: “ … particles are dynamically composed of one another in a self-consistent way, and in that sense can be said to ‘contain’ one another. This cosmic network of interpenetrating things is like a network of pearls, so arranged that if you look at one you see all the others reflected in it. In the Hindu myth of Indra’s net, a similar notion is applied to the whole universe.”
As the threads of Indra’s net bind the gems to the net so do our minds bind the other systems to the universe. Whatever you do to one jewel affects the entire net. A single compassionate act – a simple helpful act – will send positive ripples across the infinite net, touching every jewel, every person in existence.
